I was thirteen years old when the Newport Beach Athletic Club first opened its doors. We had four handball courts, no basketball court, a vibrating back machine with one leather strap (would love to have that back just for the fun of having it) and one bike with the front wheel gone mounted on a piece of wood for cardio equipment. The café that we have now was three times larger with only a juice bar when we opened. Remember those Raspberry Coconut Hansen Juice shakes with Alta Dena Honey Ice milk, nothing better. There was a set of bleachers in our current stretch area upstairs and the current cardio area was just a hallway with nothing in it, just like the downstairs hallway which had only benches for the handball courts. The towels we issued 46 years ago were the same size as we have today 22 inches by 44 inches. I just can’t figure out why they don’t fit around the guys waists so easily as they did twenty five years ago. It must be the new modern dryers and the towels shrink more today than they did years ago. I would hate to think that unnecessary weight gain has anything to do with the towels being to small.
How about the old sun room in the men’s locker room if you didn’t set the timer right you encountered a major sun born. Remember the elite few that forgot to put on a pair of NBAC shorts? It’s hard to believe I still have a group of Junior High friends that I still lift weights with, in fact Scott Reid and I go back to the second grade at Newport Heights Elementary School. But so much for the past let’s look ahead to the future.
I am really looking forward to developing the NBAC into the finest training facility that our community can offer. I am enjoying Rock Institute and all the youthful energy they bring. NBAC members can use their equipment in the Rock room you just need to ask for help if you don’t know how to use the Kaiser air equipment. I am always looking for ways to make changes that will make the club better, remember sometimes change is as good as a vacation. Thanks for all the great years.
We are always looking for new members to join the NBAC family. To celebrate our anniversary our NBAC members can bring a family member or friend in for a free month during the month of April, just see Tom to work out the waiver. Thanks for all the support.
